All seemed to have had a good Christmas break and were full of chatter as we covered on average 30 books per student! I now have an assistant, Alyssa Stevenson, and this has made an enormous difference to the quality of homework assistance. She takes the 6 pupils up to grade 4, listening to reading, testing Phonics and helping with Maths and other homework. I can now concentrate my efforts on the 13 grade 5’s and 6’s. It has already made a huge difference. Added to that, the grade 6’s are benefiting from extra Afrikaans tuition on a Monday afternoon given voluntarily by a former teacher of Sun Valley Primary. Many of our Xhosa speaking students struggle with this third language. Others have missed vital input at grade one and two level, due to limited English at that stage.
Our musical skills are growing steadily. Several of our students are studying two instruments and some showing great promise. For those whose musical skills are more limited, the recorder was introduced and has proved very popular with those learning to play it. We have a small music concert this week with even the beginners taking part! It will be held at the home of our violin teacher.
Alyssa is also responsible for our Youth Club. This is a forum where our Grade 6’s get to look around and start to learn how they can pay forward to others. It is an enormously important concept to learn as they will eventually be the ones who will reach out into their own communities and create change.
A good start to the year, thanks again to our wonderful supporters, without you none of this would be possible. Know that you are making a huge difference in many lives, the outworking of which we may never know but will certainly reach out for many years to come!
