AIMSSEC is an initiative of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), a centre for education and research based in Muizenberg, Cape Town. Established in 2003 as a partnership project with Cambridge, Cape Town, Oxford, Paris Sud XI, Stellenbosch, and Western Cape Universities, AIMS promotes mathematics and science in Africa, recruits and trains talented students and teachers and works to build capacity for African initiatives in education, research, and technology.
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC) is a schools mathematics enrichment programme. AIMSSEC was recently selected as one of just three projects nominated from 33 countries for the UNESCO-HAMDAN prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers.
They received their award together with the Rato Bangala Foundation (Nepal) and the Banco del Libro (Venezuela) in Dubai on 24 April 2012, in the presence of the UNESCO Director-General. The prize was set up with funding from Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum of Dubai in 2009, and is awarded every two years to candidates who have shown outstanding achievement in enhancing the performance and effectiveness of teachers in developing countries within marginalized or disadvantaged communities.
AIMSSEC is a schools mathematics enrichment programme offering free learning resources for learners of all ages from 5 to 18+ years together with professional development courses for teachers. All AIMSSEC activities are free for teachers and learners.
AIMSSEC promotes the Mathematical Thinking Course as the first step in the training of Mathematics Subject Leaders. To date, AIMSSEC has run this course 15 times for a total of 800 teachers from all over South Africa.
